My Musical Journey

My studio is located on a farm in Camlachie, Ontario, Canada.  I have always loved music.  I love to listen for things in songs that I have not noticed before.  When I was young, I would tape the radio during the day so that I could hopefully get a recording of a song that I liked (on demand music did not exist).  I remember the first time that I listened to a song on stereo speakers, Rock Rock (Till You Drop) by Def Leppard.  I was amazed at the rich, punchy, full stereo sound that I did not hear on my mom's rectangle shaped mono tape player (you know the one with the record button inside the play button, that if you accidentally pushed it down, you would record over your music).

In High School I played guitar in a rock band.  Our band recorded a couple originals (one on a borrowed 4 track tape recorder and another in a basement studio in London on an 8 track machine (we just had to buy the tape, bring a case of beer, & pizza).  Once I graduated and started working, I would always gravitate back to recording. I would create several parts of songs but then put them on hold (I bought a house, got married, moved, changed jobs, bought a farm, had children, changed jobs, changed jobs, etc).  But somehow I always would find myself back to recording my musical ideas but I never really finished any of them.

Finally in 2019 I released my first single “Seen That Look Before” under the artist name “Be Ready To Listen”.  Since then I have released 5 more songs & 1 cover song with some friends and have put them on steaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.

I know what it is like to not finish a song.  I know what it is like to want to make a song but never start. I know what it is like to have these musical ideas in my head but never really capturing them or finishing them.  My song “The Journey of the Hero” has some audio files, like the guitar solo, that I recorded over 20 years ago. Once I started to dedicate my time to finishing a song, it became easier to finish more songs. I also spent years improving my skills mixing and mastering music which help my workflow so that I could concentrate on creativity and not get stuck by the tools.

I know what it is like try to make a song and how hard it is to finish it.  I know what it is like to have personal lyrics that now you are sharing with strangers and making yourself more open and vulnerable.
